M/M (Paris) | West Coast Début

The illustrious French design studio, M/M (Paris) makes it's West-coast début this evening at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.  The celebrated design partnership created by Mathias Augustyniak and Michaël Amzalag in 1992 has, among much else, produced stunning work for French fashion houses, Balenciaga and Givenchy, the Swedish Perfumery, Byredo, as well as worked with björk to produce her now-iconic Vespertine cover.  

The free event tonight will begin with a conversation with M/M (Paris) at 7:30 p.m. in the Ahmanson Auditorium, followed by a book signing and reception in the gallery.

Reverse Ombré

What an absolute pleasure to have a few days visit with my beautiful cousin Bethany while on holiday in California!  During our visit (in addition to numerous, spontaneous kitchen dance parties and a near JB overdose), we made an impromptu visit to a local salon where she transformed her virgin blonde locks into to a sophisticated honey-toned reverse ombré.  Paired with blunt bangs and layers she's a picture of perfection.

CHANEL N°5

My first fragrance memory was formed when I found a miniature bottle of Chanel N°5 in my mother's things in her childhood bedroom at my grandmother's house when I was quite young, maybe seven.  The grown-up elegance of the tiny glass bottle, the diamond cut stopper and the singularity of the scent stayed with me.  I would dab the perfume from the miniature bottle onto the wrists of my barbie dolls.  As an adult, I still treasure the half-empty bottle of Chanel N°5 that I received as a gift from my parents in eight grade.  I use it sparingly to retain the vividness of those original scent memories and for when I want to travel back to those pure childhood moments of discovery.

Cynthia Rowley debuts an ingenious gold bangle that doubles as a flask at her SS13 show.  No word as yet on when we can purchase these lovelies but I'm looking forward to donning four at a time.   

Sea Change

Have a listen to the one-woman electronica project of Oslo/Berlin based Norwegian artist Ellen A. W. Sunde, Sea Change, and her exquisitely dreamy soundscapes.  Happily, Sea Change is opening at Sandra Kolstad's record release party at Parkteatret on the 29th so I'll have a chance to see her perform live in one of my favorite, ultra-cozy Oslo venues. Byredo Black Saffron

       

A long time fan of Stockholm-based fragrance house Byredo's conceptual and oftentimes unisex scents, I always look forward to the release of a new fragrance.  Ben Gorham's latest parfum, Black Saffron, promises to be every bit as intoxicating as its predecessors.

Black Saffron, an oriental composition, opens with the bright citrus note of the Asian Pomelo and crisp Juniper Berries, mellowed into a golden silage by Kashmiri Saffron. At the Black Saffron heart, lies Black Violet fused with a Leather Accord, their dark, dry composition born aloft by the delicate transparency of Cristal Rose. At the base, Blond Woods add radiant warmth and harmony , punctuated by staccatoed flashes of luscious raspberry. The journey concludes with the gentle, earthy evocations of Haitian Vetiver.
